Coalition Background and Formation
The Brookhaven Community Coalition (BCC) is a diverse partnership of stakeholder organizations who strive to safeguard and enhance our communities’ quality of life. We were originally formed in March 2011 as the Stop the Sludge (STS) Coalition to stop bio-solid wastewater sludge from being further disposed of at the Town of Brookhaven Landfill. Now our mission has expanded to concentrate on other issues that are affecting our neighborhoods’ health and safety.
Whether it is from existing controversial land uses such as the Brookhaven Town Landfill and the proposed closure of Manorville Compost; or failed air quality tests from Long Island Compost/Great Gardens and Global Land Materials; there are serious concerns about these facilities’ and others that impact our communities. We are committed to promoting and facilitating active community involvement through developing an inclusive network of people concerned with environmental health. We seek to address the need for more and better oversight, standards, and cooperation that will ultimately ensure a healthy living environment for our residents. By holding all of our government agencies accountable and to resist corporate control of our air quality, drinking water and above all our health and safety we believe our goals are achievable.
